Career Prospects in Multimedia Management

What is Multi-Media management?

What you are reading right now is a form of media. Yes, media is simply a plural term for a medium, as in a method to get information across. Now, imagine just how diverse media is- there is audio, video, print, digital, even augmented and virtual media. There are endless possibilities here and when these different mediums are referred to as one, the term ‘multi-media’ is used.

So what can you do to get a job in multimedia management? Well, joining a multimedia management course seems to be a logical thing to do- but wait! Let’s backtrack a bit here, why get a job in multimedia management in the first place? What even is multimedia management?

To put it bluntly, multimedia management is one of those management fields that are more general and do not focus on just one particular aspect of media. There are hundreds of parameters like the functions, operations, human resources, logistics, finance, production, marketing and technological management.

All of these are virtually the responsibility of a multimedia manger. It is an interesting line of work certainly and requires some knowledge of the world of broadcasting to begin with if careful attention to details is duly paid- it also happens to be one of the more handsomely paying jobs but in order to grasp at the full inner workings of the field a multimedia management course is recommended.

Education, Eligibility and Skills required

As is the case with most management jobs, this is also a post-graduate level profile and thus requires a master’s in business administration in multimedia management. The basic 10+2 and bachelor’s degree must be completed with at least 60% marks in order to qualify for enrolling in the MBA program and a background in mass media, media-related technology such as communication engineering or audio engineering, etc. or a bachelor’s in business management is preferred and happens to carry a lot of weight in the later stages of the career as it gives the students a strong foundation to build upon with the course matter of the MBA.

Other than these pre-requisite degrees the prospective students are interviewed and then upon selection they can choose one of the variations of the degree as entertainment media or mass media management. The course matter, however, remains rather generalized and focuses more on the pure managerial aspect of the job. The traditional degree (on-campus degree) spans two years and four semesters.

As the industry overarches Newspapers, Television, Radio, Music, Films, the Internet, Games, Books and Magazines it requires an equally diverse group of qualities. Ideally- good communication skills, visualization ability, team management and teamwork, time management, analytical ability, an affinity for data analytics and stats, problem solving skills, flexibility and creativity are all contributors towards a balanced and skilled multimedia manager.

Job Profiles, Salaries and future prospects

Some of the most common Job profiles that a multimedia management student can hope for are Media Strategist, Marketing Analyst, Media Manager, Media Planning Manager, TV Producer, A/V (Audio-Video) Editor, Digital Media Assistant, Corporate Communications Head, Digital Media Analyst, Channel Head. As it is rather obvious- these are more entertainment-oriented job profiles- but there are a plethora of positions that are not from the entertainment industry and are rather in the mass-media side of things, Channel Head, A/V Editor, etc. intermingle with mass media sector too and then there are positions unique to it such as Manager of Print media, Publishing Manager, Print Marketing Manager, etc.

The average salaries offered at entry-level are 2.5 to 3 LPA, at profiles like a Multimedia Analyst, etc. the mid-career salaries and/or salaries at better profiles such as Media Production manager, Publishing Manager, etc. scale upwards to 5 to 7 LPA and late-career and high profile jobs such as Channel Head, Executive Manager of Media, etc. fetch as rather generous salary of 10 to 15 LPA. The size and impact of media in our country is something to fear and respect, it isn’t one of those industries that are impacted by a lot of parameters and frankly if someone with the right skills and toolset can make his/her place in the industry, then the career progression is almost a guaranteed smooth sail.
