Career Prospects in Digital Marketing

India has the lowest global average age for its citizens, which is to say most of the working population is young. ‘Most’ has an entirely new meaning when it is the most of 1.35 billion people and that has been one of the most alluring facts for the predictions that are going around for India. The younger population is tech-savvy and fairly dependent on the internet, given that we were the highest in the number of internet users in the recent statistics. This is one of the reasons India is the perfect landscape for digital marketing to prosper. 

Consumers are lined up, out to wherever the eyes can see and the demand is fairly high for multitudes of products, the missing variable in this equation is well thought out targeted marketing to capture the attention of these consumers and propel the sales for the said product. Digital Marketing is the marketing or spreading information about a certain product or service or service as a product to the target demographic for it in order to increase the number of sales for that product. Since we’re living at the height of the internet age, we can safely assume it is the most powerful tool that can be used to market a product. 

In the case of digital marketing jobs, what is true for India happens to be true for the world as well. In surveys from 2017, it was noted that- over half of the world’s population is using the internet on a daily basis. That is close to three and a half billion users. While India in 2019 dropped to the fourth position, there’s china, USA and brazil right alongside us as markets to tap into using the digital mediums. Old methods of marketing, or analog marketing if you will- was very limited in terms of customization, reach and proper analysis of its target demographic. 

The smartphone storm that took the world by surprise in the early 2010s and is still raging onwards stronger than before has solved all of those problems and the limitations for digital marketing are much lower in number to the old method of doing things. 

Machine learning comes into play a lot and that takes away a lot of uncertainty and inconsistencies in the statistical data as algorithms keep getting better every day. 

Digital marketing is as lucrative as it gets and people have earned over three to four times what they were earning previously before a career switch to digital marketing and even the average salary hike is close to double. That being said, it is no easy job. Since most of the work is based on viewership and Internet traffic the deeper a person’s own platform penetrates and creates an audience for it, say a blog or a website or a YouTube Channel for that matter, the easier it is for them to start working on their own terms. 

Using Google’s AdSense and AdWords, a person can maybe open their own individual or collectively owned digital marketing firm increasing their liberties in terms of their work hours and pay. Landing a job in corporate digital marketing jobs is also a viable option and calls for more job security and smoother career progression. 

Specialization is offered in digital marketing as a supplementary degree can be completed to better equip yourself with the skill sets required for the job such as search engine optimization, content writing, content editing and graphic design. There are both educational institutions and MOOCs available as a distance learning option with nominal course fees available for interested candidates to pursue. Specialized digital marketing jobs such as Digital marketing intern, Digital marketing executive, SEO Executive, Link Building specialist, Social media specialist, Google Ads specialist, Email marketing specialist, Web Analyst, Online reputation executive, Content marketing executive, etc. are various levels of experience and qualifications. The average salary of entry-level job profiles such as SEO executive is around 2.5 to 6 LPA depending on the specifics of the job duties and with better and more niche job profiles such as Subject Matter Expert or Digital Marketing Manager, the salary rises to about 6 to 10 LPA from the get-go. These of course progress as well with the experience of the candidate, so career prospects of digital marketing are great in India.
