This caused a number of problems such as poverty to set foot in the country’s roots and diseases follow. We have a population plagued by poverty for decades, now there is a rather curious diversity in the types of problems in health and wellness that have made themselves apparent in the lives of Indian people. Our healthcare system is thus in constant need of expansion and new innovations and with it effective management.

Healthcare management courses are designed to equip the students with the proper tools and develop skills that are needed to manage a healthcare organization such as a hospital or an insurance agency, or perhaps a diagnostics center or a pathology, all of these organizations are set up in such a way that they require efficient management at all stages of operation and failing that in most cases ends up not only risking the business, it ends up risking lives. There are a lot of people working in these places, there are finances and supply chains and marketing and accounts involved that aren’t in the array of abilities of pure medical professionals.

Education, Eligibility and Skills required

Following the usual pattern of management job- this is also a post-graduate level job profile and thus requires a master’s in business administration in healthcare management. The basic 10+2 and bachelor’s degree must be completed with at least 60% marks in order to qualify for enrolling in the healthcare management courses and a background in finance, medicine, healthcare, etc. or a bachelor’s in business management (also from the relevant stream) is preferred and happens to carry a lot of weight in the later stages of the career as it gives the students a strong foundation to build upon with the course matter of the MBA.

The traditional degree (on-campus degree) spans two years and four semesters, there are a number of other options to consider as well. Such as short term MOOCs that might add over the bachelor’s degree in healthcare management or a Distance Learning alternative to a traditional degree which is substantially lighter on the pocket where the cost of the degree is considered but lacks in that practical exposure to some degree- enough for it to not be overlooked.

As the job requires a very in-depth analysis of the company’s operations and along with livelihoods being dependent on the management there are actual lives dependent on the smooth functioning of the healthcare system. Ideally- good communication skills, visualization ability, statistical analysis ability, time management, analytical ability, problem-solving skills, a comfortable relationship with business decision making and accounts, etc. are all contributing skills towards becoming an efficient healthcare manager.

Job Profiles, Salaries and future prospects

Some of the most common Job profiles that a student can land in healthcare management are Medical Insurance manager, Hospital Manager, Healthcare IT Manager, Medical Analyst, Medical Financial Consultant, Marketing Manager, Hospital Director, Manager of operations, Purchase manager, Medicinal Inventory Manager, etc. Other than these fields there are aligned streams that also require management professionals and contribute directly to the functioning of Healthcare systems.

The top recruiter in this field varies with private sector insurance firms and hospitals, healthcare tech firms, consultancies, nursing homes and pharmaceutical manufacturing companies. The government sector also hires the healthcare management courses but after giving some entrance examinations and basic interviews. Apollo, Tata, Reliance, IMS, AMGEN, government hospitals, etc. are all actively recruiting in this industry.

An entry-level Healthcare Manager with less than 1-year experience can expect to earn an average total compensation (includes tips, bonus, and overtime pay) of 3.5 LPA, at profiles like Medical Financial Analyst, Healthcare Management consultant, etc. the mid-career salaries at job profiles such as Senior insurance manger, medical inventory manager and healthcare operations manager, scale upwards to 5 to 7.5 LPA and late-career (about 10-15 years of experience) and high profile jobs such as Healthcare management Specialist, Financial Management Specialist, Hospital Director etc. fetch a rather generous salary of 8.5 to 12 LPA.

What is Healthcare Management?
